Top 10 Movies of 2018

2018 was a year of incredible films across all genres. I was able to see more movies than ever this year than ever and really enjoyed working on this list. That being said, I am well aware I am leaving off several "great" movies (Sorry Green Book) due to the fact that 1 I am only 1 person, not able to watch 100s of movies, and 2. this is my personal favorites and as you may be able to tell, I am no professional film credit. So with that said, My top 10 movies of 2018...

10. Upgrade

Coming out of nowhere, Upgrade shows us what technology could have in store for us in this action packed, thriller. Containing some of, if not the best fight scenes of the year, Upgrade felt fresh, exciting and kept you guessing throughout.

9. Black Klansman

A fascinating and shockingly true story, Black Klansman carried an important message and an unnerving look at society while somehow still managing to keep a great sense of humor. With a new spin on the buddy cop genre, this film was smart, funny, and powerful.

8. Mission Impossible: FalloutGreen Book

Tom Cruise's still got it. Decades later, the Mission Impossible franchise is as good as ever with the ageless Cruise finding new ways to amaze, this time dangling from a Helicopter and jumping out of a plane at 30,000 feet. The action package sixth entry in the franchise finds new way to be exciting and fresh as ever.

7. Vice

While the performances in this movie were amazing across the board, especially Christian Bale's transformation to become Dick Chaney, the movies style and direction are what put this movie into my top 10. Adam McKay's shows that he is a directing force to be reckoned with. Vice is interesting, funny and impactful and will leaving you thinking long after you leave the theater.

6. A Quite Place

As a proud scaredy-cat, a horror movie has to be pretty damn great to make even my Honorable mentions list. So, that should really tell you something about A Quite Place. Never have I seen a movie use sounds more effectively and create such suspense with silence. John Krasinski is a true triple threat as he wrote, stared and directed in a this original, beautiful and thrilling film.

5. Black Panther

Black Panther managed to find a way to tell a new and exciting story in a way we had not seen before while still feeling very much a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filled with great characters and incredible scenery, Black Panther was a very significant film that still was able to have fun and show off some kick ass action sequences.

4. Won't You Be My Neighbor

The biggest surprise on my list comes from a small documentary that I was not aware of and not excited about seeing before turning it on. So, it was a total shock when I wound up being totally emerged in the story of Fred Rogers and moved to literal terms by the film. A powerful, moving, and inspiring look at our culture and how we can still be kind and make a difference in the world.

Rating 4.5/5

3. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Fresh, funny, fun, and absolutely beautify. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was another movie that I was not overly excited going into but left with a big smile on my face and was ready for a 2nd viewing. Spider-Verse was a wild ride with a great story and characters and that was portrayed as if you were inside the comic pages themselves unlike anything I've seen before.

Rating 4.5/5

2. Avengers: Infinity War

The biggest and most hyped movie of 2018, Avengers: Infinity War somehow managed to live up to the expectations and more. Playing more like part 1 of a 2-part season finale, Infinity War was the culmination of 18 "episodes" and years of fandom. Easily the most re-watchable movie the of the year, Infinity War tells an incredible story that is funny, daring, and utterly entertaining.

Rating 4.5/5

1. Bohemian Rhapsody

Coming in on top, Bohemian Rhapsody. While most people site lack of drama or a deep diving into the serous subject matter as major flaws of the movie, I see those strengths. This movie is fun! It puts you front row to some legendary concerts where you see Rami Malek transform into Freddie Mercury. The Live Aid scene that closes out the movie is remarkable and will stay with you days after the movie ends.
